从19世纪40年代开始，存在主义在其自身的发展过程中，出现了与“马克思”相结合的趋势，进而出现了存在主义的马克思主义，其中主要以萨特和梅洛·庞蒂为代表。萨特作为一个存在主义哲学家，从现象学存在主义走到“存在主义的马克思主义”。他对马克思主义有着种种批判和指责，这里所说的马克思主义不仅指马克思本人理论与方法中的辩证唯物主义，尤其是恩格斯的自然辩证法，而且指斯大林模式和源于这种模式的论战，但他又欣赏马克思的唯物史观，相信马克思主义关于阶级斗争和社会革命的许多论断，并在一定程度上付诸实践（骆徽，2008：2）。梅洛·庞蒂在其《人道主义和恐怖》中，使用了很多马克思主义的术语、言词来表达自己的社会历史观，认为其社会历史观是马克思主义的。他力图把存在主义改造成与马克思主义相一致的学说。马克思主义对现存的社会制度、人道主义所做出的阐述、批评，以及对人道主义和社会理论成立所具备的条件的阐述，梅洛·庞蒂都是持赞成态度的。他赞扬马克思主义具有不可超越性。同时要求把马克思主义当中“僵死”的概念去掉，拿存在主义来“补充”（张景先，2012：34）。
