定义

爱国主义是指历史地形成的忠诚和热爱自己祖国的思想和感情，集中表现为民族自尊心和民族自信心，为保卫祖国和争取祖国的独立富强而献身的奋斗精神。爱国主义不仅体现在政治、法律、道德、艺术、宗教等各种意识形态和整个上层建筑之中，而且渗透到社会生活的各个方面，成为影响各民族和国家命运的重要因素。“在中国社会主义现阶段，爱国主义的主要内容是加强全国各族、各阶层、各界人士和一切爱国力量的团结，争取实现祖国的统一，反对霸权主义，维护世界和平，加强国防建设，维护国家安全，发扬自力更生、艰苦奋斗的精神，坚持改革，勇于创新，为实现社会主义现代化，把中国建成高度文明、高度民主的社会主义国家而奋斗。爱国主义是社会主义道德的重要规范之一。它要求人们把对祖国的热爱变成自己的行动，努力为祖国和人民的利益而工作；坚持民族平等和民族团结，反对民族压迫和种族歧视；具有强烈的民族自尊心和自信心，反对民族自卑感和盲目的民族优越感。爱国主义是中华民族的光荣传统和崇高美德，也是中国各民族大团结的政治基础和道德基础”（金炳华等，2001：23）。邓小平强调：“必须发扬爱国主义精神，提高民族自尊心和民族自信心。否则我们就不可能建设社会主义，就会被种种资本主义势力所侵蚀腐化”（邓小平，1994：369）。他要求社会主义新人要努力“捍卫社会主义祖国的荣誉，为社会主义祖国的前途而英勇献身”（邓小平，1994：256）。
