工人起义是工人运动的一种形式，是指工人阶级用武装斗争去反击资本家的剥削。在19世纪前半期有两次最著名的工人起义，分别是法国里昂工人起义和德国西里西亚工人起义。1831年和1834年法国里昂工人为反对资本主义剥削压迫发动了两次武装起义。1831年11月21日，法国里昂的工人开始罢工，举行抗议示威，后与军警发生冲突，转为自发的武装起义。起义者提出“做工不能生活，毋宁战斗而死”的口号。经过 3天战斗，工人一度占领里昂城。但是起义很快被七月王朝政府调来的军队所镇压。1834年里昂再次爆发了工人起义，起义的直接原因是政府逮捕和审判罢工领袖，发布禁止工人结社集会的法令。这次起义具有更鲜明的政治性质，不仅提出经济要求，还提出废除君主制度，建立共和政体的口号。起义群众同政府军在里昂郊区和市内进行 6天激战，终因力量悬殊被政府军镇压。里昂工人的两次起义是法国无产阶级作为独立的政治力量登上历史舞台的重要标志之一。1844年6月4日，西里西亚纺织业重镇——彼得尔斯瓦尼达渥的织工们在企业主茨凡奇格尔的住宅窗下唱革命歌曲，遭到军警的毒打和逮捕。此事成了织工起义的导火线。翌日，愤怒的工人起来战斗，他们的武器不过是斧头和石块，因而敌不过前来镇压的政府军队。轰轰烈烈的起义也归于失败。但它它推动了工人运动的发展，表明无产阶级已作为独立的政治力量登上历史舞台（via: http://baike.baidu.com/item/%E5%B7%A5%E4%BA%BA%E8%BF%90%E5%8A%A8）。
