关于人的本质或本性的基本看法和学说。在中国，孔子首先提出“性相近也，习相远也”（杨伯峻，2012：253）的人性命题，但是并未深入揭示人的本性。孟子首次提出人性本善，认为“人之性善也，犹水之就下也，人无有不善，水无有不下”（王刚，2013：291）。荀子批判孟子的性善论，认为人性本恶，并且提出“化性起伪”的解决办法。韩非子认为，人的本性是趋利避害，但这是人之常情，无所谓善恶，要因性任法，赏罚分明。西汉董仲舒把人性分为上、中、下三等。唐代韩愈明确提出“性三品”说。在西方，古希腊最初的思想家把人看成是具有感性的自然物，人性被理解为人的自然本性。柏拉图以人性分析为基础，以追求善的理念为目标，提出了一套实现国家秩序和个人完善生活的理想方案。亚里士多德认为,人和一切其他生命实体的根本差别就在于理性，人之所以为人，就在于他有理性。基督教人性观点认为，正是因为人性是恶的，所以要忍受苦难，等待耶稣解救人类。中世纪宗教神学占统治地位，以神性否定人性。欧洲近代的启蒙思想家，以人性论为武器，反对神学唯心主义和封建专制主义，以人性反对神性，以自爱自利的自然天性反对禁欲主义，在反封建的斗争中起过进步作用。马克思主义的人性观是建立在唯物辩证法的任何事物都有一般性和特殊性的原理之上的，他把人性归结为三种属性：自然属性、社会属性、精神属性。人来源于自然，人首先是作为自然物存在的。但是“人的本质并不是单个人所具有的抽象物。 在其现实性上, 它是一切社会关系的总和”（马克思等，2012：135），同时，人的精神需要也是人的需要的基本方面。人的本性归根到底是人的社会属性，由其在生产关系中（其总和是经济基础）所处的地位而决定。所以，只有具体的人性，没有抽象的人性，应当以社会物质生活条件为出发点来解释历史，来说明人性的变化。

In class society there is only human nature of a class character; there is no human nature above classes.
