定义

任何宗教都发端于一定的宗教意识，可以说宗教意识是宗教得以产生和形成的首要的、核心的因素，没有宗教意识就没有宗教，而不同宗教之间的差异，归根结底都可以归结为宗教意识的差异。宗教意识具有社会性和群体性，是对超自然存在物的信仰，是历史的、变化着的。可以从宗教意识具有的两个层次来理解：第一个层次是宗教意识的理性形态，也可以说是高级形态，它是以宗教的学说、教义等形式表现出来的。第二个层次是感情形态，也可以说是低级形态，是以群众性的宗教心理，包括宗教情绪、感情、态度、行为倾向等表现出来的。一般而言，宗教领袖及教职人员偏重于前者，而普通信徒则多偏重于后一种。两者是密切结合的，最终根源可以追溯到人们的物质生活条件与他们所处的客观社会环境（沈祖祥，2005：4-6）。宗教意识是社会存在的颠倒了的歪曲反映，但宗教意识一经形成，就成为宗教综合因素中的主要因素，而且正是这一主要因素，成为宗教现象特征的核心。宗教意识是宗教观念的基础，从而也是宗教信仰的基础（陈麟书，1986：212）。学界对宗教意识性质有不同解释：有的认为它只是普通意识的一种表现形式，并不单独存在；有的则承认并论证其独特性，其中最著名的是奥托对“神秘者”概念的描述。宗教意识是宗教产生和存在的普遍的意识基础（金炳华，2003：689）。马克思认为：“宗教里的苦难既是现实的苦难的表现，又是对这种现实的苦难的抗议。宗教是被压迫生灵的叹息，是无情世界的感情，正像它是没有精神的制度的精神一样，宗教是人民的鸦片”（马克思等，2012：2）。恩格斯认为：“宗教是在最原始的时代从人们关于自己本身的自然和周围的外部自然的错误的、最原始的观念中产生的”（马克思等，1965：348），“一切宗教都不过是支配着人们日常生活的外部力量在人们头脑中的幻想的反映，在这种反映中．人间的力量采取了超人间的力量的形式”（马克思等，1995：666）。
