定义

农民起义，是农民的武装斗争，是农民反对封建地主的阶级斗争的最高形式。农民起义是农民和封建地主之间的阶级矛盾发展到尖锐化的产物。在封建社会，地主占有绝大部分生产资料，而农民则没有或仅有很少的生产资料，不得不耕种地主的土地，地主用地租的形式占有农民的剩余劳动。有时，地主还侵占农民一部分必要劳动。地主对农民的残酷剥削，激起了农民的反抗。这种反抗发展到一定程度，便爆发农民起义。在中国封建社会，爆发过大小数百次农民起义，如秦末的陈胜、吴广起义，汉末的黄巾起义，唐末的黄巢起义，明末的李自成起义，清朝的太平天国起义等。中国历史上的农民起义，规模之大，是世界历史上所仅见的（刘炳瑛，1988：298）。毛泽东指出，在中国封建社会里，只有这种农民的阶级斗争、农民的起义和农民的战争，才是历史发展的真正动力。因为每一次较大的农民起义和农民战争的结果，都打击了当时的封建统治，因而也就多少推动了社会生产力的发展（毛泽东，1991：625）。农民起义推进社会发展和进步的作用主要表现在以下几个方面：一是更新统治集团。旧的、腐败的、低能的、暮气沉沉的统治集团，被新的、廉洁的、能力卓越而又生气勃勃的集团所代替；二是调整统治者与被统治者、剥削者与被剥削者的人口比例；三是调整土地占有状况；四是创造有利于封建国家进行政策调整和改革的大环境。农民起义和农民战争虽然不能创造新的生产力，也不能改变封建的生产关系，但是，由于它扫荡了最腐败的社会势力，更新了统治阶级，调整社会上各集团各阶级的利益关系，调适了上层建筑和经济基础的某些环节，由此创造了有利于生产发展和社会进步的大环境，同时也就为新的生产力的成长和新的生产关系的产生创造了条件（孟祥才，2003：97）。对于农民起义的评价，要具体分析，不可一概而论；农民起义不仅有“失败”也有“成功”，因而对于农民起义“总是失败”的评价是不准确的；并且，农民起义对社会历史确实是有推动作用的。首先，推翻极其残暴极其腐朽的封建统治旧政权，重新建立一个“此善于彼”的封建统治新政权，是农民起义的目的；其次表现在迫使封建统治者“改造”或“调整”政策。同时还应该看到，推动历史进步的不仅是农民起义，只有人民才是推动历史进步的决定力量。
