不可比性通俗可以解释为不存在可以比较的可能性。作为科学哲学用语，亦译为不可通约性。不可比性由美国Th.库恩（Thomas Samuel Kuhn）提出，库恩认为由于新旧范式是根本对立、互不相容的，在竞争着的范式之间“选择”这一问题不可能单靠逻辑和试验来解决，因而新旧范式，新理论和以前的理论在认识论上互不相容。库恩指出不可比性主要包括三个方面：由于对解决哪些问题的看法不一致，竞争着的范式的支持者关于科学的定义、评价标准存在着不同；由于工作于不同的世界，竞争着的范式的支持者对相同的问题从相同的方向得到的结果也不一致；范式转化是整个概念网的转变并重新落实到整个自然界（冯契等，2000：65）。Th.库恩认为，这种范式变化造成了理论的不可比性和间断性，即不可翻译、无法找到共同的逻辑预设。后来，费耶阿本德（Paul Feyerabend）从人类学的角度进一步补充和发展了这一概念。他认为当我们说在一个理论里的概念不能在另外一个理论里使用时，是因为两个不可通约的理论使用了不同的语法规则，这些语法规则是不可比的（牛秋业，2010：118）。
