定义

社会主义物质文明是指改造自然界的物质成果，表现为社会主义社会中人们在物质生产和物质生活两方面所达到的水平。“物质文明”一词，在我国最早见于1902年12月14日由东京并木活版所印刷的《译书汇编》第二卷第十一期署名攻法子的“政法片片录”的一组文章中的《物质文明之必要》一文。十一届三中全会以来，随着党的工作重点转向以经济建设为中心，社会主义物质基础即物质文明建设迅速提上日程。1982年中国共产党第十二次全国代表大会的政治报告提出了社会主义的根本任务之一，是建设高度的社会主义物质文明。社会主义物质文明是人类物质文明发展的新阶段，它的必然要求和最终结果是高度发达的生产力和比资本主义更高的劳动生产率，社会财富的巨大增长并以按劳分配的原则为全体社会成员所享用，在发展生产的基础上充分满足全体社会成员日益增长的物质需要。物质文明的成果归全体人民共同享有，为社会主义服务，是社会主义物质文明区别于其它社会物质文明的基本标志。社会主义物质文明是巩固发展社会主义经济制度，政治制度和社会主义精神文明建设的基础，是社会主义优越性的重要体现，是向共产主义过渡的基本条件（马国泉等，1992：441）。
