家庭是指婚姻关系、血缘关系或收养关系基础上产生的，亲属之间所构成的社会生活单位。自人类社会产生以来，家庭不仅是人们社会生活中的一个重要社会组织，而且是人类社会中最为普遍的基本组织形式之一。绝大多数个体通过家庭进入社会，一生也基本是在家庭中度过。从社会设置来说，家庭是最基本的社会设置之一，是人类最基本最重要的一种制度和群体形式。从功能来说，家庭是儿童社会化，供养老人，是满足经济合作的人类亲密关系的基本单位。从家庭的构成来看，人类学家普遍认为，家庭是由亲子所构成的生育社群，亲子是指它的结构，生育是指它的功能。如拉德克利夫-布朗曾提出：“形成亲属体系的结构单位被我称之为‘基本家庭’，它是由一对夫妇及其子女组成，无论他们是住一起还是不住在一起”（拉德克利夫·布朗，1999：54）。费孝通借鉴了这一观点，并运用几何学原理对家庭结构进行了详细的阐释，认为父、母、子三者之间的关系如同三角形的三边，是家庭的必要组成部分，唯有这三边同时具备，才能真正称作家庭（石艳，2013：94）。
