人的不同的主体形态和客观环境决定着人的不同的本质。人的本质可分为“人的类本质”、“人的一般本质”、“人的阶级本质”和“人的个体本质”四种不同的类型。人的本质论的任务，旨在阐明人的本质的这四种不同形态的内容及其之间的内在联系和关系。人首先是类的存在物。研究人的本质，首先就要研究人的类本质。所谓人的类本质，亦即人类的本质，是指人类作为一个整体所具有的本质特征以及它与动物的根本区别（王双桥，2004：313）。马克思说：“一个种的全部特性，种的类特性就在于生命活动的性质，而人的类特性恰恰就在于自由的自觉地活动”（马克思等，1979：96）。这里说的“自由的自觉的活动”就是指人类的生产劳动。事物的本质由事物内部的根本矛盾决定。劳动作为人的类本质，作为人类生命活动的基本形式和方式，也由人类自身发展的特有状况决定。马克思说：“人直接地是自然存在物。人作为自然存在物，而且作为有生命的自然存在物，一方面具有自然力、生命力，是能动的自然存在物；这些力量作为天赋和才能，作为欲望存在于人身上。另一方面，人作为自然的、肉体的、感性的、对象的存在物，和动植物一样，是受动的、受制约的和受限制的存在物，……人只有凭借现实的、感性的对象才能表现自己的生命”（马克思等，1979：167-168）。在这里马克思揭示了人类作为“有生命的自然存在物”的两个基本方面的特征，即受动性和能动性的统一。劳动作为人的类本质，是由人的受动性和能动性这两个方面的基本特征共同决定的。人的受动性体现着人与动物之间的联系，它表明人并不是什么神创造出来的自然的存在物，而是自然界长期发展的产物，是“自然界的一部分”（马克思等，1979：95）。人的能动性体现着人与动物之间的区别，它表明人又不是一般的自然存在物，而是“宇宙的精华，万物的灵长”。
