定义

事物内部比较稳定深刻的必然联系，同“非本质联系”相对。本质联系是事物内部最根本的联系，它既决定事物的根本属性，也规定着事物发展的趋向。本质联系与非本质联系互相联系、互相作用。本质联系决定非本质联系，非本质联系也反映和影响本质联系。本质联系与非本质联系在一定情况下又互相转化。在这种情况下是属于事物的本质联系，在另一种情况下则是属于事物的非本质联系。唯物辩证法要求人们从事物的普遍联系中区分本质联系和非本质联系，通过非本质联系抓住事物的本质联系。只有抓住事物的本质联系，才能认识事物的性质和根本特征，抓住事物发展的内在规律。本质联系是分层次的。人们认识事物就是从不甚深刻的本质联系到更为深刻的本质联系的无限深化的过程。本质联系和规律性是同等程度的概念，规律就是“本质的关系或本质之间的关系”（列宁，1990：128）。
