定义

哲学人类学是指哲学方面以人为对象，以研究人的本质为中心的学说。哲学人类学有广义和狭义之分，广义的哲学人类学是指当代西方哲学中着重讨论人的问题的各流派；狭义的哲学人类学是指德国哲学家舍勒首创的哲学学说。一般认为，舍勒的《人在宇宙中的地位》是“哲学人类学的代表作；该书一反舍勒以往的现象学传统，以经验科学和形而上学相结合的方法，重新确认哲学研究的主题是完整的人。”（金炳华，2003：558）哲学人类学的理论基础和来源十分广泛，歌德、康德、费尔巴哈、黑格尔、马克思、克尔凯郭尔、尼采等等人的理论和学说都是哲学人类学的直接来源。因为凡是人的问题的哲学探讨都是哲学人类学的直接理论前提。由于现象学、存在主义、生命哲学等也探讨了人类学问题，因此都与哲学人类学有密切的关系。哲学人类学的主要问题是搞清楚“人是什么?”“人如何与其他生物相区别?”“人应该并能够做些什么?”“人的发展前景是什么?”等一系列关于人的根本问题。除此之外，由于生物学、生理学、心理学、物理学、化学、人种学、社会学等学科也是以人为对象进行研究，为了力求从哲学的角度解释科学所发现的有关人的本质和人的地位的一切知识，因而哲学人类学也从这些学科汲取知识。但是哲学人类学又区别于科学、社会学或人类学，因为哲学人类学强调对于人的整体性研究和从哲学高度进行反思。
