中国历史文化名镇名村，是由建设部和国家文物局从2003年起共同组织评选的，保存文物特别丰富且具有重大历史价值或纪念意义的、能较完整地反映一些历史时期传统风貌和地方民族特色的镇和村。这些村镇分布在全国二十五个省份，包括太湖流域的水乡古镇群、皖南古村落群、川黔渝交界古村镇群、晋中南古村镇群、粤中古村镇群，既有乡土民俗型、传统文化型、革命历史型，又有民族特色型、商贸交通型，基本反映了中国不同地域历史文化村镇的传统风貌（中国历史文化名镇名村.via：

About the type of China’s historic and cultural towns and villages, the academia has not unanimous view. Based on an analysis from the traditional function perspective, this paper studied the main functional difference of 251 historic and cultural villages and towns presented, considered that these towns and villages could be roughly divided into seven types with agricultural, industry-trade, administrative, martial, transport, religion, recordative, etc., and pointed out that the classification may offer some reference for conservation and development planning of China’s old town and village.
