定义

休厄尔亦译“惠威尔”，是英国唯心主义哲学家、科学史家，属自由派。休厄尔以伦理学著作和归纳法理论著作而闻名。1828至1832年任该校矿物学教授，1838至1855年任该校道德哲学教授，1841至1866年任该校三一学院院长。他大半生都在剑桥三一学院度过。休厄尔早年对物理科学各部门从力学和动力学直到潮汐现象都感兴趣，他还曾研究历史和科学哲学。1850年后，休厄尔又撰写关于道德神学方面的著作，并对康德的著作作过认真的研究。在哲学史上，休厄尔“主要的贡献是对有归纳性质的自然科学的研究。认为科学史所展示的归纳过程不像逻辑学家们所说的那种有概括作用的论证过程。归纳与演绎是相反的操作。普遍命题由归纳发现并由演绎证明”（金炳华，2003：100）。他最著名的著作是《从远古到现代的归纳科学史》和《以归纳科学史为依据归纳科学的哲学》。后一书后来扩充为三部独立著作：《科学思想史》、《新编新工具》和《论发现的哲学》，其《新编新工具》指的是培根的一部研究归纳推理的著作《新工具》。尽管他有关归纳法理论的著作较之穆勒的同类著作稍有逊色，但他把归纳推理法重新成为对哲学家和科学家同样重要的课题。他断言只有归纳推理在整个历史学中的应用得到认真分析时，才能恰当地应用它。
