中国共产党缔造和领导的人民军队。中华人民共和国的主要武装力量。1927年8月1日，中国共产党发动南昌起义，建立革命武装，中国人民解放军遂诞生。初，沿用国民革命军番号，后称工农革命军。1928年5月起又改称中国工农红军。在土地革命战争时期，全国红军不断发展壮大，总人数最多时达30万人，建立了许多块革命根据地，多次粉碎了国民党军队的“围剿”，并先后组成红一方面军、红四方面军、红二方面军等多支红军大部队。1935年10月、1936年10月，红一、二、四3个方面军经过长征，先后胜利到达陕甘地区。红一、二、四方面军会师后，全军共约8万余人。抗日战争爆发后，随抗日民族统一战线的形成，红军又改编为八路军、新四军等。在华北、华中、华南，发动游击战争，开辟敌后战场。在8年抗战中，中共领导的八路军、新四军等抗日武装共作战12.5万余次，歼灭日伪军171.4万多人，建立了拥有1.3亿人口的100多万平方公里的解放区，部队发展到120余万人，对抗日战争的胜利作出了巨大贡献。解放战争时期，八路军、新四军等正式改名为中国人民解放军。1947年2月，中国人民解放军总部正式成立。1949年1月15日，中央军委发出对全军进行统一编制的指示，将全军整编为4个野战军，即第一、二、三、四野战军，并将各大军区整编为5个大军区，即华北军区、西北军区、中原军区、华东军区、东北军区。在整个解放战争中，解放军共消灭国民党军队807万人，结束了国民党的统治。新中国建立后，中国人民解放军逐渐由单一的陆军发展为拥有陆、海、空三军并包括各种技术兵种在内的合成军队，成为一支不断向现代化发展的人民军队。现中国人民解放军设有总参谋部、总政治部、总后勤部以及其他军兵种领导机关，全军最高领导机关为中共中央军事委员会。中国人民解放军成立后，为中国人民的解放事业和社会主义建设事业，立下不朽功勋，为捍卫国家领土主权完整、保卫人民，作出不可磨灭的贡献。（史仲文等，1998：349）
