五四精神的核心内容是“爱国、科学”，也就是“彻底地、不妥协地反帝反封建的爱国主义精神”（五四精神.via：http://baike.so.com/doc/3896595-4089972.html）。爱国主义是五四精神的泉源，五四爱国主义精神蕴含着彻底的、不妥协的反帝反封建要求；五四爱国主义精神注入了马克思主义、无产阶级国际主义的新元素；五四爱国主义精神的形成是与中国工人阶级这一先进阶级的发展壮大和觉醒是密不可分的。五四精神是一种中国知识分子特有的入世使命感，这种使命感直接上承儒家思想所呈现“先天下之忧而又，后天下之乐而乐”与“家事、国事、天下事、事事关心”的精神，这种使命感使中国知识分子以为真理本身应该知道政治、经济、文化与道德发展，这些追求真理的人看到了政治上、社会上的不合理现象，便极感不安，深觉自己应该加倍努力，一方面应该参与爱国运动，另一方面觉得自己工作与国家前途甚有关连。为了民族的独立和解放，为了国家的繁荣和富强，前仆后继，英勇奋斗，积极进取，勤奋工作的精神。知识青年是传承五四精神的先锋代表，当今，继承和发扬五四精神就要坚持爱国主义与社会主义的高度统一，不断加强理论认同、政治认同、情感认同，坚定共产主义信仰和社会主义信念，紧跟党走。总之，五四精神代表着诚实的，进步的，积极的，自由的，平等的，创造的，美的，善的，和平的，相爱互助的，劳动而愉快的，全社会幸福的统一体。
