资本主义自我调节是资本主义主动地寻求自我调节和调整，是在资本主义内部的自我改善，是资本主义生产关系的自我调整。资本主义国家在其发展过程中，在不断地探索自身的发展规律，针对各种新问题，不断地进行自我调节、改良和改善。在资本主义灭亡之前，其所能容纳的全部社会生产力将不断发挥出来，而资本主义国家对其自身发展的自我调节就是促使其社会生产力发挥出来的重要手段（朱国宏，2000：12）。总体来说，资本主义的自我调节有以下三个原因：一是社会生产力发展的客观需要，资本主义需要不断进行自我调节以使其生产关系适应生产力的发展；二是稳定社会、维护资本主义统治的需要，资本主义只有不断对自身进行调节以缓和阶级矛盾、避免矛盾激化威胁其统治；三是对抗社会主义的需要，资本主义不得不进行自我调节，甚至借鉴社会主义的某些政策主张以适应世界形势的新变化。资本主义自我调节的内容主要包括资本主义经济运行机制的改良、企业组织结构的优化、管理机制的调整、收入分配制度的改善和社会福利制度的健全等等（朱国宏，2000：13-14）。但是，资本主义的自我调节并没有解决它固有的矛盾和问题，资本主义的自我调节没有触动其统治的根基，生产资料私人占有仍占主导地位，其剥削本性没有变,社会基本矛盾仍存在。
