定义

指20世纪60年代以后开始在发达资本主义国家发展起来的以反对环境污染和维护生态平衡为基本目标的群众性运动，它的主要斗争对象是本国垄断资本和国际性的跨国公司。一般说，生态运动普遍反对资本主义生产的无限制增长，反对掠夺性地开发自然资源，反对核武器、核试验和核动力，因为这些活动浪费人力、物力、财力，污染空气、土地和河流，破坏人类的生物圈。生态运动开始是由西方国家一批研究生态问题的科学家发动起来的，他们以“生态系统”（ecosystem）理论为指导，提出包括人类自身及其生存环境在内的整个生物界是一个整体，是一个相互依赖和互为生存条件的系统，因此，任何破坏人类生物圈的行动，任何有害于维持生态平衡的活动，都无异于人类的自杀。近20年来，生态运动不断发展壮大，特别是进入80年代后，随着西方各国以绿党为首的绿色运动的形成，多数国家的生态运动都已经成为有关国家绿色运动的组成部分，很多成员也都参加了绿党，生态运动已经由过去无固定组织的群众运动，发展成为有固定组织和领导人的有步骤、有计划的群众运动，运动的斗争内容也相应扩大，资本主义社会的各种社会经济问题，实际上都已经包含在运动的范围之内（汝信，1988：812）。作为西方“新社会运动”的主流，生态运动及其发展对西方的政治格局和走向有着重要的影响。在人类社会即将跨入21世纪之际，研究西方生态运动的政治分野，了解其中生态主义、生态社会主义等思潮、流派的发展现状，对于我们分析当代社会主义的走势、认识冷战后西方社会主义思想的发展前景，有着迫切的现实意义（周穗明，1997：36）。进入90年代，西方生态运动形成了新的政治分野。由此，生态运动内部发生进一步的分化和组合，呈现出复杂的格局。
