效用，（1）宋军士名，也叫“效用士”。本来指自愿效力于军中之士，《续资治通鉴长编》“庆历元年八月乙巳”条记仁宗时下诏说：“诸军、诸班直子弟、民间有材勇者，如愿效用，听诣所属自陈，以补神捷指挥，满万人，即权遣戍边。”之后陕西边防军中采用了效用的名目，作为新的军士名称。可以说，它的来源有壮健罪犯发配至边军戴罪立功的，有当地豪民富户、官员子弟和门客、举人挂名军中领取军俸的，也有无作战任务的军士自愿参战的，比较复杂（中国历史大辞典编纂委员会编纂,2000）。（2）是指效力和作用，是指经济学中最常用的概念之一。19世纪始西方经济学家使用这个概念主要是分析消费者的需要，指商品或服务具有的满足消费者的欲望或需要的功效，也指消费者在消费商品或服务时获得满足的程度。效用是指物品和劳务满足消费者欲望的能力，但是西方经济学所说的效用不是指物品和劳务的客观效用（即使用价值），而是指主观效用，即消费者对物品和劳务满足其欲望能力的一种主观评价。可以说，这种效用是指消费者是通过内省来认识这种效用，只是存在于消费者的心目之中。可以说，这种主观效用在伦理学上是中性的，也即如果一种物品和劳务只可以满足一种欲望，即使这种欲望从伦理学看是一种不道德的欲望，这种物品仍被认为是有效用的（韩明安，1991：539）。
