定义

古希腊哲学家、数学家。毕达哥拉斯出生于大约公元前580年至公元前570年之间的萨默斯，由于反对波利克勒第斯的僭主统治，大约在公元前529年移民到南意大利的希腊殖民地（弗兰克·梯利，2014：21）。毕达哥拉斯青少年时就热衷于研究学术和宗教仪式，曾去埃及、巴比伦和希腊各地游历，以博学闻名于世。在移居克罗顿岛后，毕达哥拉斯广招门徒，建立具有神秘色彩的，合政治、宗教、哲学自然科学研究为一体的毕达哥拉斯学派，成为当地保守的贵族政治的决策核心（金炳华，2003：88）。毕达哥拉斯的理想是在其追随者中发展政治美德，教育他们为了国家的善而行动，使自己服从于整体。因此，“他强调进行道德训练的必要性：个人应当学会控制自己，抑制自己的情感，使自己的灵魂和谐；应当尊敬长辈、老师和国家的权威。毕达哥拉斯的团体似乎是一个实践性的公民训练学校，领袖的理想在这里得到检验”（弗兰克·梯利，2014：21）。通过对数学的研究，毕达哥拉斯认为数的本原就是万物的本原，倾向把数看作是先于现实事物独立自存的本体，促进了希腊哲学中唯心主义派别的形成和发展。毕达哥拉斯生前并无著作，但毕达哥拉斯学派有把所有著作和学说归诸创始人的传统，所以毕达哥拉斯本人的学说和学派其他成员的学说难以区别（金炳华，2003：88）。
