定义

是在对比各种具体的宗教中来认识宗教整体的一门综合性学科。比较宗教学的发端可追溯到古希腊罗马时期，诗人赫西俄德整理了古代神话和神谱，爱奥尼亚的哲学家开始用理性来讨论诸神问题。到了中世纪和文艺复兴时期，基督教世界逐步扩大了对东方文化和古代文化的了解，一些传教士和人文主义者开始研究非基督教的宗教，但当时还不可能形成一门独立的学科。到了16、17、18世纪，由于资本主义和殖民主义以及科学技术的发展，对于宗教的研究更有了迫切感，开始建立了资产阶级的宗教学理论。进入19世纪下半叶，研究宗教开始逐渐形成为一门独立的社会科学。“比较宗教学”是从欧洲基督教传统观点上对其他宗教进行比较分析。在这方面比较客观地收集分析了各民族宗教资料的首推英籍德国人东方学者麦克斯·缪勒所主编的51卷《东方圣书》。在此前后，经由泰勒于1871年发表的《原始文化》一书对“万物有灵论”假说所作详细论述和弗雷泽以其十分丰富的资料汇编20大卷《金枝篇》及其续编的问世，标志着“比较宗教学”的正式诞生。在第一次世界大战前后，“比较宗教学”有了进一步的发展。它不仅从地域上由英国向美国、德国等地传播开来，而且在研究范围上也越来越有所扩大。在英、美等国，它向“社会人类学”伸展，在德国，更多着重发展了对宗教发展史的研究第二次世界大战后，日本有些学者也在这方面开展了研究。目前关于比较宗教学的学科定位、研究方法等尚还需要进一步深入研究（倪文杰等，1989：158）。
