费尔迪南·德·索绪尔（Ferdinand de Saussure，公元1857年11月26日—公元1913年3月22日），瑞士作家、语言学家，是后世学者公认的结构主义的创始人，现代语言学理论的奠基者。1857年11月26日，他出生于瑞士日内瓦。1875-1876年他在日内瓦大学学习物理学和化学。1876年，他进入德国莱比锡大学。1878年他发表论文《印欧语的原始元音系统》，被誉为“历史语言学中杰出的篇章”。1881年他在巴黎高等研究所教古代语言和历史比较语言学。1891年他应日内瓦大学的聘请，教印欧系古代语言和历史比较语言学。1907——1912年他讲授普通语言学，首创该学科（顾丞峰，2008：164）。1915年出版的《普通语言学教程》是索绪尔去世后由他的学生根据课堂笔记和索绪尔夫人提供的十分零星的材料整理而成的。该书中的主要观点后来成为结构主义语法的基本原则。索绪尔在分析语言时采用了辩证思维的二分的方法（楚军，2014：10）。索绪尔语言理论以语言和言语的区分为基础，语言学只能就语言而研究语言，排除任何非语言因素（如社会的、物理的、言语的……）的干扰；而就语言来说，必须区分共时和历时，语言学只研究共时的语言系统，排除任何历时因素的干扰，这样就承认了语言既有它的历史范围，也有它当前的结构的属性；而就共时的语言系统的研究来说，只研究形式，不研究实质，“语言是形式，不是实质"的论断就是这一思想的集中体现。F·詹姆森说，“索绪尔的创新之处在于坚持这样一个事实：作为一个完整系统的语言在任何时刻都是完整的，不管刚才在这系统中发生了什么变化。”索绪尔的语言学思想今天被称为“索绪尔语言学”，也称“索绪尔主义”。索绪尔语言理论的影响不只限于语言学，现代人类学、精神分析学、文学、哲学、戏剧等多个领域都受到它的深刻影响，并采用《普通语言学教程》的理论和方法分析这些学科所研究的对象的结构。
