定义

贝尔（Daniel Bell，1919-2011），是当代美国著名的社会学家、哲学家，“文化自由协会”创始人，在社会变革和政治社会学理论方面有重要贡献。主要著作有《意识形态的终结》、《走向公元2000年》、《后工业社会的来临》、《第二次世界大战以来的社会科学》、《资本主义文化矛盾》等。1960年，贝尔获哥伦比亚大学博士学位；此后，贝尔历任《新领袖》、《常识》等杂志编辑，哈佛大学教授。由于20世纪70年代的美国社会出现了一系列的经济危机现象，因而贝尔认为美国社会初步呈现“工业社会的结束”的迹象。资本主义社会的进步不是因为体制制度的变革，而只是因为工业社会的瓦解和后工业社会兴起，而知识、科学和工程技术在经济社会中的地位和作用及其快速发展促进了美国从工业社会向后工业社会的转变。贝尔认为，后工业社会即是把资本主义社会与社会主义社会两种对立制度融为一体的制度，其特征是“经济上从以制造业为主转向以服务业为主；社会的领导阶层从企业主转移到科学技术研究人员；理论知识成为社会革新和决策依据；未来的技术发展是有计划有节制的，技术评价占有重要地位；制定政策需通过智能技术”（金炳华，2003：514）。
