定义

爱尔维修（Claude Arien Helvétius，1715—1771），法国启蒙思想家、唯物主义哲学家、无神论者(王宏等，1986：306)。爱尔维修曾任总包税宫，后专事著述，主要从事有关社会政治问题、国家法律问题以及伦理道德问题等的理论研究，以道德观点、伦理学观点的形式来表述自己的各种社会学观点和国家法律观点（米·阿·西林，1960：14）。他继承和发展了洛克的唯物主义经验论，肯定人的一切认识都来源于感觉，认为感觉是绝对可靠的，人的观念都来自肉体的感受性，精神也是物质感受性的表现，这样他就把人的全部精神活动都归结为感觉，从而陷入忽视理性认识作用的狭隘经验论。他把感觉论运用于社会生活，提出了一套较完整的以功利主义为核心的社会伦理学说。他认为人的肉体感受性是道德的基础，基于这种肉体感受性，人都有本能地趋乐避苦、趋利避害的情感。他把这种情感叫“自爱”，也即“自私”、利己，看作是人的本性，认为道德必须和利益结合起来，真正的美德是“把个人利益和公共利益很紧密地联系起来”。他提出“人是环境和教育的产物”的著名论断。所谓“环境”主要是指社会环境，即政治、法律制度，主张“法律创造一切”，环境的改变须从立法和教育入手，而立法和教育的好坏，又取决于天才的立法者和教育者，从而提出了“教育万能”的口号（陶银骠等，1989：409-410）。
