历史进步这一概念起源于历史学与哲学的融合，康德认为历史进步的过程即从恶到善，从原始的自然状态走向理性的自由公民社会，并最终实现人类的永久和平。黑格尔以绝对精神为逻辑出发点去诠释人类社会历史的发展，认为“世界历史无非是‘自由’意识的进展，这一种进展是我们必须在它的必然性中加以认识的”（黑格尔，2006：17）。他还把世界历史的发展过看作是合理性和合目的性统一的过程。他认为历史进步实现的是从不完善的状态到逐渐完善的状态的过程，是从低到高的渐进式过程。马克思把生产力和人的发展作为历史进步的标准，并从生产力的发展和人的发展来描绘世界历史的发展进程和规律。马克思认为生产力是一切社会发展的最终的决定力量，它作为社会生活中最活跃的、最革命的因素，不仅决定着人类在处理人与自然的关系中的主动性，而且决定着物质生活实践的发展，决定着人的全面发展的实现以及社会生活的全面进步。马克思的历史进步的主要观点体现在社会的演进上，他明确的提出了三种社会演进观，即人的依赖关系、物的依赖关系、建立在个人全面发展和他们共同的社会生产能力成为他们的社会财富这一基础上的自由个性的阶段。与第一个依赖关系相对应的社会是前资本主义社会中人与人之间的直接的自然关系，自然经济生产关系占据主导的社会。与第二个依赖关系相对应的是资本主义的生产关系。与第三个依赖关系相适应的社会是共产主义社会。共产主义社会便是马克思的历史演进的逻辑终点。历史的进步是前进性与曲折性、偶然性与必然性的统一（张丽娜，2014：12）。
