定义

原始宗教，指存在于尚不具有成文历史的原始社会初期、以反映人和自然矛盾为主要内容的宗教，亦称史前宗教。起源于远古人们对自然界既恐惧又祈求的混沌观念，以相继形成的自然崇拜、图腾崇拜、祖先崇拜、英雄崇拜等为具体内容，是原始社会发展到一定阶段形成的原始思维的产物。原始宗教产生于原始社会的社会存在，又反过来作用于社会，支配人们的社会文化行为，是原始人最主要的精神支柱。19世纪西方学者对原始宗教的起源、形态、发展诸方面进行了广泛研究，提出了“万物有灵论”、“前万物有灵论”、“前逻辑论”等假说。然而“宗教的原始状态，在同文明社会的接触中，尤其在大规模基督教传教运动的冲击下，发生了很多变形”（金炳华，2003：701），因此目前对原始宗教的研究有诸多困难，要尽量避免主观臆断，力求科学地探索其中带规律性的因素，而一些残存在少数民族中的原始宗教的残余，则成为对宗教学研究十分珍贵的社会活化石。从原始宗教所表现的各种崇拜形式中可以看到，它虚幻地、歪曲地反映着原始社会人类生活与自然界之间的矛盾，作为古代人类意识形态的核心和社会活动的重要领域，与哲学思想的萌芽和民间文学艺术的起源有着不可分割的渊源关系，其中的神灵观念、崇拜仪式、活动规则等对原始社会中人的自然观、历史观、道德观、价值观等均具有决定性的重大影响。
