原始交换是指原始社会的交换行为和交换方式，包括馈赠式交换、物物交换和以原始货币为媒介的交换等。最初的交换存在于原始共同体之间，由于不同的共同体存在的自然环境和劳动产品有差异，邻近的关系友好的部落之间开始用互访和馈赠的形式互通有无，这时的原始交换不计较所交换的物品是否等价。这种原始共同体之间的交换有利于氏族制度的巩固。双方用馈赠的方式交换劳动产品的行为是商品交换的萌芽。在这种方式的基础上形成了物物交换这一商品交换的初级形式。物物交换的方式在原始农业民族中广泛使用，这种方式不同于馈赠式交换，需要计算交换的劳动产品的价值，但仍然是一种直接交换，即买和卖的行为同时完成，而不用货币作为交换媒介。随着交换的经常化以及劳动产品的多样化，直接交换变得越来越困难，原始货币开始在一些原始农业民族中流通，这些原始货币的材料包括牲畜、珠饰、生产工具、贝壳等，这些原始货币通常是同时流通的，他们虽然已经具有了货币的部分职能，但是仍然保留了自身所具有的使用价值。个体独立经济出现后，商品的交换关系出现在原始共同体内部而不再仅仅是原始共同体之间，使农业与手工业剥离，促进了私有制的发展，最终成为误解原始共产制度的重要力量（赵德馨，1990：58）。
