定义

非本质联系是事物外部的、稳定的现象联系，同本质联系相对。它不规定事物的本质，通常对事物的发展和趋向不起主要的、决定性的作用（长春地区军队院校教学协作中心政治教育协作区，1986：82）。非本质联系是偶然联系，这种联系不具有规律性。非本质联系是对事物变化、发展不起决定作用的联系。因为非本质联系是事物的外部联系，它虽然也能影响事物的存在和发展，但不起决定作用（赵德水，1991：561）。非本质联系对事物只能起加速或延缓的作用（刘炳瑛，1988：138）。事物的本质联系与非本质联系是两个不可分割的方面，它们彼此渗透、互相影响。本质联系决定非本质联系，非本质联系也影响本质联系；本质联系是非本质联系中稳定的东西，非本质联系表现本质联系。本质联系与非本质联系是互相转化的。此时此地是事物的本质联系，彼时彼地就变成了事物的非本质联系。反之亦然。人们认识事物就是要通过事物的非本质联系进而认识事物的本质联系，把握事物的发展规律。只有找出事物的本质联系，才能弄清事物的性质，提出正确方法，促进事物的发展（刘延勃，1983：94）。非本质联系不具有因果关系的特点。我们在实际工作中要善于识别各种非本质联系。不要误把非本质联系当作本质联系，否则，就会看不清楚事物的本质，抓不住中心，找不到解决问题的正确方法（赵德水，1991：561）。
