定义

社会主义现代化建设是社会主义国家按照社会发展的客观规律的要求，有计划地发展国民经济和科学文化事业的全部活动。社会主义现代化建设的目标，就是要实现民族的复兴、人民的富裕、国家的强盛。主要包括社会主义经济建设、社会主义政治建设和社会主义思想文化建设。社会主义现代化建设，根本任务就是发展社会生产力，邓小平同志指出：“说到最后，还是要把经济建设当做中心。离开了经济建设这个中心，就有丧失物质基础的危险。其他一切任务都要服从这个中心，决不能干扰它、冲击它”（邓小平，2001：214）。以经济建设为中心是解决社会主要矛盾和完成社会根本任务的客观要求。目前中国尚处在社会主义初级阶段，为了摆脱贫穷和落后，尤其要把发展生产力作为全部工作的中心，始终坚持四项基本原则和改革开放，吸收世界各国的优秀成果，缩小同发达国家的差距。社会主义思想政治建设和社会主义思想文化建设都是围绕经济发展这一中心，将人们的思想认识统一起来，是我国意识形态领域建设的最主要的内容。江泽民同志在党的十六大报告中指出：“党要承担起推动中国社会进步的历史责任,必须始终紧紧抓住发展这个执政兴国的第一要务，把坚持党的先进性和发挥社会主义制度的优越性,落实到发展先进生产力、发展先进文化、实现最广大人民的根本利益上来，推动社会全面进步，促进人的全面发展。紧紧把握住这一点,就从根本上把握了人民的愿望,把握了社会主义现代化建设的本质”（江泽民，2002：15）。江泽民的社会主义现代化建设本质思想为社会主义现代化建设系统工程提供了理论支持。
