以家庭为基本单位所进行的各种活动和所发生的经济关系的总称。家庭经济生活不仅直接关系到家庭的幸福和睦，关系到家庭成员的成长和情操以及事业的成功,而且关系到社会发展和社会安定。家庭是微观经济实体，家庭经济受社会经济运行的制约，又对社会经济运行发生巨大的反作用。家庭经济活动主要包括生育、生产、交换、分配和消费四个方面（周定庆，1996：47）。具体来讲，（1）生育。家庭生育指家庭人口的生产和再生产。按照西方微观人口经济学的观点，家庭是生育行为赖以存在的微观经济单位，生养孩子是家庭的一种投资行为，这种投资包括妊娠全过程的物质投入、精神投入和时间投入，以及孩子出生后住宿、抚养、教育、培训、医疗、卫生、娱乐、情感、时间的投入等等，直到孩子成人并完全独立所支出的各种费用（童欣，2010：77）。（2）生产。家庭生产指家庭物质资料的生产和再生产，包括家庭从事的生产经营活动和家庭的劳动力再生产。家庭生产是国民经济的必要补充,为社会提供丰富多样的产品，满足人们多方面的需要,增加国民生产总值，增强国家经济实力。（3）交换。家庭交换繁荣和活跃了市场,促进整个社会货畅其流动。（4）分配。家庭的收入分配是家庭和谐、社会兴旺的经济基础，也是社会分配行为在家庭微观经济单位的体现。家庭收入合理分配，在逐步提高家庭生活水平的同时，需注重积累和智力投资，能为国家提供建设资金和高素质的建设人才。（5）消费。家庭消费在很大程度上决定着社会产品的实现，避免社会劳动的浪费，提高社会经济效益。
