二元对立是结构主义人类学的基本概念，指人类深层结构中的一种逻辑结构。结构语言学与结构主义理论的核心范畴。“二元对立”这个术语最初为费尔迪南•德•索绪尔（1857-1913）所采用，声称语言是一个以对立关系为基础的系统，此后被结构主义、女权主义、结构主义批评和语言学家广泛使用（维克多•泰勒等，2007：43）。在索绪尔看来，符号或词语的意义仅仅在于它与其他符号或词语相对立其最确定的特征就是其他符号或词语所不具备的特征。二元对立是可能存在的表意差异的极端形式。在一个二元对立系统中，只存在两个符号或词语（约翰•费斯克，2004：28）。二元对立最经典的例子，是理性与感性的二分，而在西方哲学中，理性一向比感性获得更高的评价。另一个例子，是存在与缺少的二分，同样地，前者在西方哲学中的地位远高于后者。这些“高等理念”的相似性，例如前述的理性、存在，和很多其他的如男性（与女性对立）、说话能力（与写作能力对立），被视为一种称为逻辑中心主义的西方哲学思想的影响。二元对立是在批判理论上，一对相反的理论，它们通常会以阶级形式出现。在结构主义理论中，二元对立论，是解释人类基层思想，文化与语言的一种相当有力的工具。相反，后结构主义者认为二元对立并不是人类思想最基本的组织，只是西方思想的加工品（二元对立.via：http://baike.baidu.com/item/%E4%BA%8C%E5%85%83%E5%AF%B9%E7%AB%8B）。
