定义

丑（陋），与美相对应，是美学的基本范畴之一。丑与美反映着从审美上被评价的对象的对立性（廖盖隆等，1993：291）。丑是审美属性中的一种，是审美评价的否定表现形式。与美的问题一样，丑的问题也是美学研究中的一个重要的问题。在西方美学史上，亚里斯多德在《诗学》中最早将丑作为一个美学范畴提出并加以研究。亚里斯多德认为，丑是滑稽的一种，审美意义上的丑不对人造成伤害；现实中艺术所描绘的丑，可引起快感、美感。奥古斯丁认为，丑是相对的，是构成美的一个条件，在整体美中起烘托作用。鲍姆加敦认为，感性认识的不完善就是丑。在中国美学史上，丑一般被解释为相貌难看。不少中国哲学家，如老子、庄子等人，将丑看作美的对立面，着重对美的相对性以及美与丑的相互转化的强调。在中国的艺术中，丑一直受到重视，成为重要的题材和审美对象（via：http://www.baike.com/wiki/丑）。马克思主义美学认为丑与美一样，是社会实践的产物，具有社会客观性；丑根源于社会实践中主客体的矛盾状态；丑的本质是合目的性与合规律性的背离，是现实对实践以及人的本质力量的否定。丑也是作为伦理学范畴的恶的外在形象的显现，作为伦理学范畴的恶是丑的内容。根据内容和形式的关系，丑大体有两种类型。一是“外丑内恶”，这种丑一般只有消极的、否定的意义；一是“外丑内美”，这种丑只是形式上的丑，因而也称“形式丑”（廖盖隆，1993：291）。
