“艰苦奋斗”是我们党在长期的革命、建设过程中形成的优良传统和作风，也是我们党的政治本色。艰苦奋斗精神是一个社会历史范畴，在不同的时代里，在不同的民族中，它都有自己特殊的内涵。然而，即便如此，艰苦奋斗精神依然有它的共性，概括起来，它是指为实现既定的目标和理想而在自己的行为中表现出的勇于克服艰难困苦、顽强奋斗、百折不挠、自强不息、贫贱不移、富贵不淫的精神，包含着积极进取的生活态度、坚忍不拔的意志品质、勇于挑战的行为方式和甘于奉献的人生境界（谢鑫，2008：8）。中国共产党的三代领导人都高度重视用艰苦奋斗精神教育和武装全党。毛泽东同志在人民民主革命即将取得全国胜利的时刻，富有洞察力地告诫全党:“因为胜利，党内的骄傲情绪，以功臣自居的情绪，停顿起来不求进步的情绪，贪图享乐不愿再过艰苦生活的情绪，可能生长”。“务必使同志们继续保持谦虚、谨慎、不骄、不躁的作风，务必使同志们继续保持艰苦奋斗的作风”。邓小平同志在领导中国人民开创建设有中国特色社会主义伟大事业的过程中，反复教诲全党要保持艰苦奋斗的创业精神，指出“艰苦奋斗是我们的传统,艰苦朴素的教育今后要抓紧，一直要抓六十至七十年。我们的国家越发展,越要抓艰苦创业。提倡艰苦创业精神，也有助于克服腐败现象”。江泽民同志十分重视发扬艰苦奋斗精神。他指出：“艰苦奋斗，事业必成；贪图享受，自毁前程。要发扬党的优良传统，使勤俭建国、勤俭办一切事业在全党全社会蔚然成风”（王焰新，2002：27）。
