理论创新是指人们在社会实践活动中，对出现的新情况、新问题，作新的理性分析和理性解答，对认识对象或实践对象的本质、规律和发展变化的趋势作新的揭示和预见，对人类历史经验和现实经验作新的理性升华。理论创新一般体现为具有重大科学意义的新现象、新规律的发现；有重大影响的新的科学方法的应用；关键性的新科学概念的提出；新科学理论的创建；新学科的创立等等。理论创新是在科学发展的历史中前进的，而理论创新本身又有力地将科学发展的历史向前推进。一部科学史就是一部科学创新史，而理论作为科学创造性活动的产物，其发展的历史就是一部创新史。以天文学理论的发展为例，从第谷——托勒密——开普勒——伽里略——牛顿——爱因斯坦，我们可以看到，后者总是敢于向前者的理论提出挑战，充分运用创造性思维，发现新问题，创造出新的理论（胡兆胜，2004：1）。依据理论创新实现的不同方式，可以把理论创新分为四种：（1）原发性理论创新，是指新原理、新理论体系或新学派的架构与形成。（2）阐释性理论创新，是指依据社会实践的需要，清除旁人附加给原有理论的错误解释，对其思想资料和原理进行梳理归纳，恢复理论本来的面目。（3）修正性理论创新，是指在肯定和继承原有理论的基础上，根据实践的需要，对原有的理论体系和原理，作出新的补充和修改，作出新的论证和发挥。（4）发掘性理论创新，是指前人已经提出的某些理论，由于各种原因，被遗忘了、掩埋了、淡化了，根据时代的需要，把它重新凸现出来，使其重放光芒（理论创新.via：http://baike.baidu.com/link?url=rNLVYbILh3omvG5KY6DMhdmfWoqwVciV9V1pCOXbgLYq3dzAkVQzMPFgMUVamd6iNvhQ6xjdIYOKyVgY79aPXK）。
