技术理性是指人类追求技术合理性、规范性、有效性和理想性的抽象思维活动、智慧和能力，是一种扎根于人类物质需求及人对自然界永恒依赖的实践理性和技术精神。技术理性这个概念，是法兰克福学派的代表人物马尔库塞综合了韦伯与霍克海默等人的观点提出的，他把理性分为批判理性和技术理性。马尔库塞认为，在以科学技术飞速发展为背景的相对富裕的消费世界中，技术已经变成处于最成熟和最有效形式中的物化的重要工具，已成为社会统治的工具，具有了意识形态性。技术理性形成了一种新的统治体制，人们陷入一种新的异化的和物化的生存方式之中。人作为一种自由的创造性的实践存在所应具有的否定性、超越性和批判性被技术理性所消解，不再是社会的反抗力量，而是被“整合”或“一体化”到现存的社会体制中，成为失去超越维度和批判维度的“单向度的人”（周立光，2007：5-6）。具体来看，技术理性具有三方面的特征：（1）它以数学的结构来解释世界，坚信理性的典范就是数学和演绎逻辑及大自然的结构可以被人认识，可以用数学公式来揭示；（2）只注重功能和操作，只关心其实用目的；（3）它把事实和价值、伦理、道德严格区分开来。技术理性作为人类理性特殊的和典型的形式，是人类多种理性的某种合取，它贯穿于人类实践活动的始终。随着技术对社会影响的逐步扩大，对社会作用的日益增加，技术理性逐步逾越了技术领域，而向社会其他各个方面渗透，成为了一种观察问题和处理问题的思维方式和方法，成为了一种世界观和方法论。
