科技意识形态为西方马克思主义代表者哈贝马斯的用语。法兰克福学派认为，科技意识形态的首要功能就在于对群众进行宣传、灌输和洗脑，通过调节公众生活和私人生活，来维护既成的社会制度和社会关系。它在发达的工业社会，表现为借助科技成就日益发展的有效的意识操纵系统来实现这一目的。法兰克福学派还认为，人的日常生活越是以专门化和技术化的形式出现，就越要受到技术理性所衍生的意识形态的辖制。而技术理性之所以能做到这一点，就在于它以工具理性去掩盖目的理性，以物质福利去弱化精神超越的冲动。概括起来就是，它将实践、意义和价值等复杂的人生问题简化为技术问题，从而维护了现行的政治统治的合法性。在法兰克福学派看来，以科学技术为媒介的文化工业之所以要欺骗、愚弄消费大众，同它力图为现状的辩护有关，而这又是科技意识形态的功能所在（陈士部，2010:137）。
