劳动分工是指人们社会经济活动的划分和独立化、专门化。1776年3月，亚当•斯密的《国富论》中第一次提出了劳动分工的观点，并系统全面地阐述了劳动分工的巨大作用。分工对劳动生产力的促进作用，不仅体现在劳动的数量和质量的增加，还特别表现在国民运用劳动力的熟练程度和技巧的增加方面。在斯密看来，自然因素和市场大小是影响分工的主要因素。自然因素的影响主要表明在农业中的劳动分工方面，如犁地、耙地、播种和收获则常常由一个人担任。随着一年季节的变化就需要进行这些不同种类的劳动，不可能是一个人固定地从事其中的任何一种。分工不仅从交换倾向产生，其发展也受交换范围（市场）大小的限制，市场的大小决定分工程度。斯密之后，李嘉图强调外生比较优势（人们作决策之前的天生差异）与分工的关系。劳动分工在马克思的《资本论》中占十分重要的地位。马克思具体解释了劳动分工导致生产率提高的原因。在他看来，终生从事同一种简单操作的工人，花费在这一操作上的时间，比循序地进行整个系列的操作的手工业者要少。因而与独立的手工业比较，能在较短时间内生产出较多的产品。在局部劳动独立化为一个人的专门职业后，局部劳动的方法也就完善起来了，经常重复做一种有限的工作，就能够从经验中学会消耗最少的力量达到预期的效果，又因为总是有好几代工人同时在一起生活，在同一些手工工场内共同劳动，因此这样获得的技术上的诀窍就能巩固、积累并迅速地传递下去（杨新华等，2012：95-96）。
