张一兵用语。他通过对政治经济学理论的深度研究，试图揭示出一条被遮蔽的线索——早期政治经济学中隐含的社会唯物主义的线索。并认为，只有立足于这一角度，才能真正深刻地理解政治经济学在青年马克思哲学转变中的重要影响作用。早期政治经济学家注重观察和经验,并不仅仅是英国经验论唯物主义自然对象直观的简单延伸，他们开始在社会生活中通过感性观察，确定客观的非实体的社会物质存在，这就是经济(物质)活动和社会关系。正是在这个意义上，张一兵认为在政治经济学那里透过他们的经济学分析，可以指认出一种新型的唯物主义哲学。固然，在经济学家那里，这还完全是以一种隐性的自发形式出现的。将这种在政治经济学中出现的既不同于自然唯物主义，又区别于马克思历史唯物主义的隐性历史哲学观点称之为社会唯物主义。这是一种始终在我们对早期资产阶级政治经济学研究中被严重遮蔽的理论逻辑（张一兵，1998：7）。
