定义

根本矛盾（fundamental contradiction），也称基本矛盾（basic contradiction），与非基本矛盾相对，是指规定事物的根本性质并对事物的全过程的发展运动发挥支配作用的矛盾（余源培，2004：130）。1937年，毛泽东在《矛盾论》中明确提出“根本矛盾”这一哲学范畴。毛泽东指出，根本矛盾是事物发展的基本动力和基本原因，贯穿于事物发展全过程并始终发挥主导作用。“事物发展过程的根本矛盾及为此根本矛盾所规定的过程的本质，非到过程完结之日，是不会消失的”（毛泽东，1991：314）。事物性质的改变随根本矛盾的变化而发生变化，如果根本矛盾尚未转化，那么事物的性质及其发展过程就没有完结；只有根本矛盾发生转化，事物才会发生质变。吸引与排斥的矛盾是无机界中的根本矛盾，波动性和粒子性的矛盾是微观世界中的根本矛盾，同化与异化、遗传与变异的矛盾是生物界中的根本矛盾，生产力与生产关系、经济基础与上层建筑的矛盾是人类社会历史的根本矛盾。根本矛盾贯穿于事物运动发展过程之中，并对事物的本质及其运动发展趋势起着决定性的作用；同时，根本矛盾也规定和影响着事物发展过程中其他矛盾的运动（冯契，1992：1423）。根本矛盾在自己发展过程中，有时会采取逐渐激化的形式；在被根本矛盾所规定或影响的其他大小矛盾中，这些矛盾有些得到激化，有些得到暂时的或局部的解决，有些得到缓和，有些则会产生新的矛盾。根本矛盾自身的发展及其对其他矛盾的规定和影响，导致事物发展过程呈现出阶段性的特征（刘炳瑛，1988：719）。
