定义

社会意识是社会物质生活、人与人的关系及其过程在人们观念中的反映，是对全部社会精神生活及其过程的总的概括。历史唯物主义的基本范畴之一，包括了个人意识中的普遍共性，是作为社会性的存在。社会意识从不同的角度可以划分为不同的类型：(1)从其主体范围，可分为个人意识和群体意识。其中，前者产生于作为个体的人的实践活动，是个人独特的社会经历和社会地位的反映，后者产生于群体的共同精神生活，是群体特定的结构、活动及其与整个社会生活的关系的反映，二者辩证统一，在一定条件下可以相互转化。(2)从其对社会存在反映的不同层次，可以分为社会心理和社会意识形式。其中，前者是直接与日常社会生活相联系的一种自发的、不定型的意识，后者是社会存在比较自觉的、系统化的反映；前者为后者的形成和发展提供了思想素材，后者对前者的发展具有指导性的重大影响。(3)从其对经济基础的关系，可分为社会意识形态和非意识形态的其他社会意识形式，前者包括政治法律思想、道德、文学艺术、宗教、哲学及其他社会科学，属于上层建筑，后者如自然科学、语言学、逻辑等，不属于上层建筑。社会意识的一般特点：(1)对社会存在的依赖性，“不是人们的意识决定人们的存在，相反，是人们的社会存在决定人们的意识”(马克思等，1997：82)；(2)对社会存在的相对独立性，社会意思有其自身存在的方式和发展规律；(3)对社会存在具有能动作用（车文博，2001：326）。马克思的社会意识也不是一般的人的意识，而是被社会经济形态所决定的社会意识形态，在这个意义上，恩格斯才有可能称“监狱和各种强制机关为社会意识的物质附属物”（马克思等，1972：167）。
