社会学是社会科学中的一门学科。它是以社会生活及其发展作为研究对象，揭示不同社会形态的结构及其发展的过程和规律的综合性学科。最早提出社会学这一名词的是法国社会学家孔德于《实证哲学教程》一书。社会学家对社会学有过不同的界定：从社会学的研究对象与范围角度，社会学是“论述社会这一完整体系以及论述个别的社会制度、过程和集团与整个社会联系的科学”（复旦大学分校社会学系，1981：267）； 从社会学的研究对象与研究特点构成角度，社会学通过“理解和解释来阐明主宰各个社会的生存和变化的形形色色的相互作用”（复旦大学分校社会学系，1981：226）；从社会学的研究对象、研究特点和学科地位角度，社会学通过“人们的社会关系和社会行为来研究社会的结构、功能、发生、发展规律的一门综合性的社会科学”（社会学概论编写组，1984：5）。19世纪30年代至该世纪末,是社会学的创始阶段。这时人们所认为的社会学,其实是整个社会科学的同义语,它的研究对象包罗了社会的一切领域。在20世纪初,社会学逐步和其他社会科学区别开来而成为一门学科。到30年代,特别是第二次世界大战以后,社会学又广泛地与其他专门学科相结合,出现了跨学科的社会学分支学科,如经济社会学、法律社会学、医学社会学等。社会学帮助研究和解决大量社会问题,对于社会主义现代化建设具有重要意义（刘炳瑛，1988：366）。
