定义

指作为社会主体的人的不断创造的过程。人类自身生产，首先包括人口的再生产。马克思和恩格斯在《德意志意识形态》中指出，“一开始就进入历史发展过程的第三种关系是：每日都在重新生产自己生命的人们开始生产另外一些人，即繁殖。这就是夫妻之间的关系，父母和子女之间的关系，也就是家庭”（马克思等，2012：159）。其次包括社会主体本质力量的再创造，具体表现为人的社会性、人的素质、人的体力和思维能力以及实践能力的生产。缺少任何一个方面，人类自身生产都是不完善的。对于人类自身生产来说，极为重要的是指劳动能力的传授和再生产、社会生活经验的积累和再生产。人类自身生产与物质资料的生产是直接生活生产的两个不同方面。两者相互制约、相互影响。“生命的生产，无论是通过劳动而生产自己的生命，还是通过生育而生产他人的生命，就立即表现为双重关系：一方面是自然关系，另一方面是社会关系”（马克思等，2012：160）。人的生产必须与物质资料生产相适应，总的表现为人口增长和物质资料增长的比例应该相适应。人类自身的生产决定于物质资料生产，反过来，人类自身的生产也反作用于物质资料的生产，即人口的增长能加速或延缓社会生产力的发展（刘铮，1981：62）。马克思和恩格斯认为，从历史的最初时期起，从第一批人出现以来，人类自身生产和物质资料生产就同时存在，“而且现在也还在历史上起着作用”（马克思等，2012：160）。
