坚持党要管党是我们党一以贯之的优良传统和宝贵经验，也是保持党的先进性和纯洁性、增强党的凝聚力和战斗力的重要保证。1962年1月21日中共中央对《全国组织工作会议纪要》的批示指出：“党要管党，党的建设，是我们在民主革命时期的主要法宝之一，也是我们在社会主义建设时期的主要法宝之一”（中共中央文献研究室，1997：98）。1962年底，全国组织工作会议上，刘少奇、邓小平同志对党员、干部提出了严格要求：党要管党，执政的党，对于干部和党员的要求，必须更高更严。江泽民同志围绕解决提高党的领导水平和执政水平、提高拒腐防变和抵御风险能力这两大历史性课题，十分明确地提出把“党要管党、从严治党”作为加强和改进党的建设的基本方针。2012年7月23日，胡锦涛总书记在省部级主要领导干部专题研讨班开班式上发表重要讲话强调，全党要增强紧迫感和责任感，坚持党要管党、从严治党，全面加强党的思想建设、组织建设、作风建设、反腐倡廉建设、制度建设，确保党始终成为中国特色社会主义的坚强领导核心（林学启，2012：73）。新的历史时期，习近平《在全国组织工作会议上的讲话》中指出，“党要管党，才能管好党；从严治党，才能治好党。”
