先进性和纯洁性是马克思主义政党的本质属性。党的先进性体现在“中国工人阶级先锋队的性质”，体现在“代表先进性生产力的要求，代表先进文化的前进方向，代表最广大人民群众的根本利益”；党的纯洁性指全党及其党员干部要始终坚持党的理想信念、性质与宗旨，坚持党的组织原则与组织纪律，维护党的团结与统一，坚决反对腐败与不正之风，永葆共产党人的政治本色与行为底线（刘红凛，2012：18）。党的纯洁性主要表现在思想纯洁、队伍纯洁、作风纯洁、清正廉洁等四个方面。党的十八大报告提出“全党要增强紧迫感和责任感，牢牢把握加强党的执政能力建设、先进性和纯洁性建设这条主线。”对马克思主义政党而言，党的先进性和纯洁性密不可分，二者相辅相成，共同构成马克思主义政党的本质属性。党的纯洁性是党的先进性的必要条件，也是党的先进性的必然要求与应有之义，纯洁性又是先进性的重要体现与重要保障。没有党的纯洁性，党的先进性就无从谈起，一个不纯洁的政党不可能成为先进性政党。保持党的先进性，首先必须保持党的纯洁性，保持党的纯洁性的根本目的是为了保持党的先进性。新时期，加强党的纯洁性建设，是保持与发展党的先进性的现实抓手与突破口。
