定义

信念是指人们在社会实践过程中逐步形成的对某种观点、学说、理想等内心的真挚信仰或坚定不移的观念。通常认为，信念是人们赖以从事实践活动的精神支柱，是自觉行动的激励力量。信念一旦形成就会给主体的心理活动以深远的影响并决定着一个人的行为的原则性、坚韧性。英国哲学家罗素曾在《人类的知识》中研究过人类信念的意义及其种类。罗素认为，信念是身体上或心理上或者两方面兼有的某一种状态，并且有五种不同的信念，主体在行为选择和自我评价时，这五种信念往往会发挥重要作用：用动物性推理补充感觉的信念；记忆的信念；预料的信念；只凭证据不经思考就得出的信念；推理的信念。罗素还认为，科学的信念在人们认识世界和改造世界的过程中产生，是以对客观规律的真理性认识为基础的科学信仰。马克思主义哲学认为，科学信念与盲目信仰或宗教信仰是完全不同的。盲目信仰或宗教信仰是与理性、知识、科学相对立的。信念往往以目的、动机的形式贯穿在人们的实践活动中，并与情感、意志相结合，形成一种稳固的观念意识支配人们的行动。“坚定的共产主义信念，是共产主义道德品质和共产主义觉悟的集中表现，它促使人们自觉地、积极地去履行共产主义的道德要求”（金炳华，2003：217）。
