定义

信仰自由，指人在信仰领域中的一种自由选择的权利。不同阶级对信仰自由的理解和规定是不同的，信仰自由在无产阶级和资产阶级那里有着深度和广度上的根本区别。资产阶级的信仰自由，主要表现为容忍各种各样的宗教信仰自由。在前资本主义社会中，信仰自由主要是零散的宗教宽容的观念和措施，表现为允许某一国家中持着与国教不同的另一种宗教的少数居民的存在，其目的是为了缓冲不同宗教信仰之间的现实斗争。在资产阶级势力的逐渐壮大和反封建斗争日益兴起的封建社会末期，原来的宗教宽容观念中逐渐发展出了资产阶级的信仰自由的思想和口号。“资产阶级信仰自由以资产阶级人道主义为思想理论基础，要求国家与宗教实行分离，认为每个人都有实现自己宗教需要的权利，就像满足自己的肉体需要一样，不受警察干涉。”（金炳华，2003：705）。资产阶级信仰自由虽然在反封建斗争中有积极意义，但资产阶级往往没有勇气去真正实现它。因此，在无产阶级及其政党看来，资产阶级的信仰自由只局限于宗教范围之中，是狭隘而不彻底的。而在社会主义国家中，无产阶级的信仰自由得到了法律的确认和现实的实行，越出了宗教信仰的界限，不仅承认公民有信仰任何一种宗教或教派的自由，而且还承认公民具有不信仰任何一种宗教的自由，克服了资产阶级的狭隘性。所以，无产阶级的信仰自由能真正去完成资产阶级信仰自由所认识到但没有勇气去完成的任务，即反封建斗争的任务。
