定义

家族是由姓氏、血缘等亲缘关系连接而成的人的集合，是社会的基本单位。中国古代国君或诸侯都是依靠家族关系维系社会发展，如：周朝分封制、晋国六卿等等。家族是在社会发展过程中逐步形成的。在原始群的杂交时期，不能产生家族。母权制氏族公社时期，由于这时男从妻居的多偶通婚，形成了母系家族，这种家族是大家族。到了父权制氏族公社时期，女从夫居的多偶通婚，又形成了父系大家族。但这时由于对偶、专偶的通婚，父系大家族之中已经包容了若干父系小家族组成的个体家庭。在我国漫长的封建制度下，“中国的家族结构是以男嗣继承制度为基础”（川口敦司，2001：103），不论大家族内部包罗的小家族、个体家庭有多少，始终保持着同姓一家族的观念。我国社会主义制度确立以后，从经济基础方面消灭了私有制，由私有制所支撑的父系大家族中的小家族或个体家庭已从封建家长制下解放出来，形成了若干较为单纯的血统关系结合成的家族。家族有对内和对外两种职能，这两种职能把人与人之间紧密的联系起来，形成不可分割的团体。具体来看，（1）家族对内职能指家族负有维持共同生计的使命，即同吃、同住、同劳动的家族经济职能，用以提供一个家族物质生产与消费的保证，维持家族的延续和扩大，生儿育女，配偶成家；维持家族成员间的感情融洽，管理、制约、调整内部成员行为的职能。（2）家族对外职能指向社会提供劳动力，相应地向社会提供智力、财力，包括对社会上老、弱、病、残、孤、寡的扶养义务。家族对外关系的维系是发展社会关系的十分重要机能，它所结成的错综复杂的社会关系，成为促使社会发展的纽带(via：http://baike.baidu.com/subview/103848/5118840.htm#viewPageContent)。
