《1857-1858年经济学手稿》是马克思《资本论》的最初手稿，写于1857年7月—1858年6月。1939年和1941年手稿曾用原文先后分两册在莫斯科出版，编者加的标题是：《政治经济学批判大纲（草稿）》。中译文编入《马克思恩格斯全集》第46卷。为了制定无产阶级的革命理论，马克思早在40年代初就开始系统地研究政治经济学，计划写一部批判资本主义制度和资产阶级经济学的巨著。1848年至1849年的革命使马克思暂时中断这一研究。1857年夏，即将到来的经济危机促使马克思重新加紧自己的研究，为的是在革命到来之前将多年来的研究工作作一个总结，并从中得出某些政治结论。从1857年7月至1858年6月一年里，马克思写下总数达50印张的七本手稿，即《1857—1858年经济学手稿》。手稿包括：《巴师夏和凯里》、《导言》、《〈政治经济学批判〉（1857—1858年草稿）》、《七个笔记本的索引（第一部分）》和一些提纲及残篇：其中的《巴师夏和凯里》是一部未完成的手稿，马克思在这里第一次明确地将资产阶级经济学区分为古典学派和庸俗学派；《导言》也是一部未完成的草稿，但却具有非常重要的意义。《1857—1858年手稿》标志着马克思的经济理论发展的一个新阶段。在手稿中，马克思不仅将历史唯物主义运用于研究经济学，详细地制定了政治经济学的研究方法和叙述方法，制定了自己的经济理论，而且进一步发展了历史唯物主义的基本原理（李淮春，1996：777）。
