定义

古希腊柏拉图用语。指美的本质或本原。在早期著作《大希庇阿斯篇》中首次提出，后在《斐德诺篇》和《会饮篇》中作了详细阐释。认为美本身是统摄一切美的事物的最高的美，真正的美，即美的理念。它可以独立存在，不依赖于具体的美的事物。它具有能使任何一件事物成为美的品质。只有当事物表现和分享了美本身才成其为美的。它在时间上与逻辑上先于美的事物，它是永恒的，无始无终，不生不灭，不增不减的（金炳华，2001：973）。柏拉图将他所谓的“理念世界”和“现象世界”区分开，而“理念世界”是唯一真实的存在。美的事物多种多样，都是因为这些事物加入了“美的理念”，即“美本身”。“美本身”应该是“一切美的事物有了它就成其为美的那个品质。”然而，柏拉图的“美的理念”只能是审美主体对各种复杂的美的现象进行概括的结果。对“美”的概念的形成是受复杂的社会历史条件制约的，它本身是一种历史的，社会的现象。绝对永恒不变的“美”从未有过（任鹏军，2011：45）。人对美本身的认识有一个循序渐进的过程，真正能够接近美本身的人只是少数哲学家。“美本身”这一观念明显地暴露出柏拉图把美的本质与美的具体事物割裂开来的形而上学倾向。
