定义

主要矛盾是体现事物和发展阶段、过程的特殊性和差别性的一种矛盾。与“次要矛盾”相对。在复杂事物的矛盾体系之中，各种矛盾所处的地位和对事物存在发展所起的作用是各不相同的。其中有一种矛盾，由于它的存在和发展，决定着其他矛盾的存在和发展，这种矛盾就称为主要矛盾。列宁在《哲学笔记》中明确运用了主要矛盾这一范畴，“这一个商品和另一个商品交换的个别行为，作为一种简单的价值形式来说，其中已经以尚未展开的形式包含着资本主义的一切主要矛盾”(《列宁全集》第55卷第149页)。毛泽东在《矛盾论》中系统阐发了主要矛盾思想。主要矛盾总是相对于次要矛盾而言的，它不能离开次要矛盾而孤立存在。主要矛盾与次要矛盾相互制约、相互作用，随着事物的发展变化，两者会在一定条件下相互转化。主要矛盾与基本矛盾不同。主要矛盾侧重揭示该矛盾在矛盾体系的发展过程中所占的主导地位与作用，同时，它往往只是表现于根本矛盾发展过程中的某一阶段，而不一定是全过程;而基本矛盾则侧重于揭示本身在矛盾体系发展过程中始终所具有的根本性质，它总是表现于矛盾体系发展的全过程。但是，有时主要矛盾与基本矛盾也可能会重合。这是由于当某一事物的矛盾既规定了过程的根本性质，而同时又在矛盾体系中居主导地位。在错综复杂的矛盾体系中，抓主要矛盾是至关重要的。抓住主要矛盾，就能抓住工作的中心，找出运动的基本环节。强调主要矛盾，绝不意味着忽视非主要矛盾。主要矛盾对非主要矛盾有决定性的影响，但非主要矛盾也会影响主要矛盾的发展和解决。（金炳华，2003：812）
